Work-site clinics control health care costs
In late 2005, Hurst Boiler, a Thomasville, Ga., manufacturer, determined it could save significant dollars through a work-site clinic for its 220 employees and their families. At the time, Hurst was spending $4,757 per employee per year for medical care and pharmacy. Hurst recruited Worksite RX in Atlanta, opened a clinic in March 2006 and, by July 2008, dropped its health care costs (including clinic costs) to $3,225 per employee per year, or 32 percent. When premium inflation was considered — 7.7 percent, 6.1 percent and 5 percent nationally in 2006-08, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation — the clinic realized a 44 percent savings in fewer than 30 months. A bonus: Sick days dropped by half a day per employee per year.
In July 2007, Orlando-based WeCare TLC opened a clinic for the city of Port St. Lucie’s 1,200 employees and their families. In a six-month update to the City Council, the city’s human resources director reported that its $443,000 investment had saved $1.36 million — a 3:1 return on investment realized from lower health plan and sick time costs. Additional savings accrued in occupational health, retention and recruitment and lost productivity.
